The Importance Of Independence in Care
At CRT we understand that independence is not defined by ability but rather through daily routines and personal choices. Our role when providing care to our service users does not mean for us to do everything for them but rather support them where necessary, ensuring tasks are completed safely and confidently.
Why Independence Matters
It can be difficult for our service users to accept that they are not as mobile or capable as before. This also makes it difficult for them to adapt to receiving care, especially in their own home. This often has a negative effect on their emotional well-being and overall quality of life. By helping them to maintain as much independence as we can, it helps our service users remain engaged in their own care, giving them a sense of fulfilment and dignity. Everyday tasks that may be easy to us can be a huge struggle for our service users. By providing appropriate support while giving them control and choice, we can empower them.
Everyday Tasks and how we can help
Here are a few examples of daily tasks and how we encourage independence through these daily routines:
Personal Care With Dignity
We understand that each service users’ needs and abilities are different. Whether we are assisting with choosing an outfit, dressing, brushing teeth or applying lotion, we offer gentle guidance and support to make sure that they are comfortable, dignified and at their own pace.
Food preparation
Rather than preparing food independently, our carers know to involve service users with the process, whether they’re choosing the food and ingredients or stirring a pot. This not only gives them a sense of independence and contribution but can also help maintain their motor skills.
Mobility and exercise
While difficult for some, exercise is important for our service user’s health. Whether it’s a short walk in the garden, using mobility aids or light stretching with a chair, tailoring the exercise to the specific service user’s abilities.
Household Tasks
Our service users often struggle with the more vigorous household tasks such as floor scrubbing or gardening. More simple tasks such as watering plants, folding clothes or tidying/organising can give our service users that sense of fulfilment without causing them to strain or exhaust themselves.
Decision making and routines
With our personalised care plans our service users are given the opportunity to discuss how they’d like their routine to be, whether they need to be waken up early or like a lie in, if like to be dressed and ready for the day before or after breakfast, we are here to fit around the needs of you and your loved ones. By actively listening and supporting our service users decisions and routine, we can make a difference and improve their well-being.
