All Leavers, All Levels: Starting Your Career In Care

We would like to Introduce Dot, one of our Home Care Workers as part of our ‘All Leavers, All Levels’ campaign. The purpose of this campaign is to show the different ways that our Care Workers have joined us and started their career in care. Dot joined us after a brief retirement and no prior work experience or qualifications that related to the Health & Social Care sector. When interviewed by our recruiter however, they were incredibly impressed with her kind and compassionate attitude and knew she would be a valued member of our team. We wanted to find out more about why Dot chose a career in care, here is what we found out:

How long have you been part of Dale Care’s Team?

I joined the CRT team as a Domiciliary Care Worker 7 months ago.

What is your favourite aspect of your role?

My favourite part of my job is getting to speak to and meet new people, getting to know them and finding out all about their lives.

Why did you choose a career in care?

Previously I had never thought that a job in care was for me, however after my husband passed away 5 years ago, I thought I would give it a go and now I can’t imagine doing anything else!

What previous Jobs did you have before retirement?

I have had a variety of different jobs ranging from driving and serving on an ice cream van, to working in a jeweller’s workshop.

Why step out of retirement to start a career in care?

I knew that I didn’t want to sit at home so when I decided to go back to working I knew I wanted a job where I could meet new people. I like to be out on the go and I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives and knew this would be the perfect fit. Now I can’t imagine not working in care as I would miss it so much.

What new skills have you learnt?

My confidence has grown enormously from working in care and it is the best job I have ever done.
